with blame, leaving a very undesriable impression, as the
words of praise are few and far between.
15.
The remarks on the ignorance of Chinese
boys of their own language are the more remarkable, because
the writers cannot fail to be aware that the cause of this
ignorance is the abolition seven years ago by the Governing
Body of the Chinese School in spite of the Headmaster's vigo-
rous and repeated protests.
16.
I regret that with the exception of the
last two which were agreed upon early in the year, I am not in.
a position to recommend the adoption of any of the suggestions
at the end of the Report, for reasons given by me in a sepa-
rate letter (No. 72/A of 29th. October) addressed to the
Governing Body.
